Eulogy for a Garage Fridge

I sit here tonight, pondering the joy our garage fridge brought to us over the years.  It even followed us across the country when we moved for a new job.  We intended to get rid of it when we left, but it had different ideas.  It somehow removed the sign I had carefully placed upon it to let the movers know it was staying with the house.  It wanted to serve us for as long as it could in our new home.  It turned out to be another 5.5 years before it would give up its ability to keep our drinks cold and our meats frozen. I remember when it was younger, and would keep our fire roasted chili, BBQ sauce, and assorted summer-time fare cold during the hot summer months in New Mexico.  We never had to worry about where to put the overflow during our frequent parties, and we never had to worry about whether the extra ice cream and pizza we purchased “just in case.” would stay frozen.

Tonight marks the night when our beloved fridge finally decided to go to its final, recyclable metals resting place.  Just to be sure it was truly gone, I tested the breakers and checked that it was securely plugged into the wall.  Both measures failed to produce a life-inducing result. At this point its clear that it has given up the energy hogging ghost that haunted it for well over 3o years.  Its time to introduce our garage to a new, energy-efficient, energy star unit.  It will be one that is seen, but not heard.  We will miss that ugly old fridge.
