Despite my good intentions, and how good the book is that I’m currently reading (The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell), I didn’t quite make 88 books in 2018. The books I did read were a mixed bag of genres and ratings. While I try to read only books that are well-reviewed, sometimes they miss the mark, and sometimes my tastes aren’t the same as the people rating the books. Consequently, I read mostly four star books, struggled through a few three stars, and wasted time on three one and two star books. Only 10 books this year got a five star rating from me. I’m stingy with the stars. My favorites this year, in no particular order, are listed below. My goal for 2019 is to read 56 books. I’ve got 491 books in my “To Read” list, but I always welcome recommendations from friends. After all, one can never have too many books to read.
- Non-fiction: “The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women,” by Kate Moore, and “Awakenings,” by Oliver Sacks.
- Historical fiction: “Before We Were Yours” by Lisa Wingate.
- SciFi: “Children of Time,” by Adrian Tchiakovsky.
- YA Fantasy: “Thunderhead (Arc of a Scythe, #2),” by Neal Schusterman. Book #1 received a five star from me in 2017.
- Mystery: “Her Last Day (Jessie Cole, #1),” by T.R. Ragan, and Righteous (IQ #2),” by Joe Ide. Book #1 received a five star from me in 2017
- Horror: “Prodigal Son (Frankenstein #1),” by Dean Koontz
- Thriller: “The Silent Corner (Jane Hawk #1),” by Dean Koontz
- Fantasy: “Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstances,” by Ruth Emmie Lang
