We hiked four peak/mountains (Bald Peak, Parkman Mountain, Sargent Mountain, Gilmore Peak) in 3.5 hours our first day. The trails were beautiful, but slick, and provided lots of natural drinking water for the dogs. The most challenging thing about this hike was having to slowly and carefully pick our way along the springs and running water from the recent and abundant rains. We were fortunate to run into park volunteers who were hard at work constructing stone steps in places that had been severely eroded. It looked like the kind of work that made me appreciate my desk job.
Somewhere early along the slippery stretch of Maple Spring trail Ginger slipped and fell on a log. It wasn’t until they were back at the car that she realized her phone was missing, and surmised it fell out of the pack when she fell. She was strangely unconcerned about being out of touch with the world for the rest of the week, refusing to spend any of our vacation time shopping for a new one. When we reached our late lunch destination at Seafood Ketch in Bass Harbor, the scenery off the patio was so pretty Ginger decided to go back to the car for the camera. On her way to the car she reached up to adjust her sports bra and to her chagrin discovered the cell phone she thought she lost. She forgot she had tucked it in there so that it would be easy to reach should a photo opportunity present itself along the trail. That, we decided, was worth each of us having our own piece of home made blueberry pie.
