Recovery Weekend

Last week’s training went as planned through Thursday night, despite my lower back pain. My chiropractor on Wednesday told me that I could continue to run unless sharp stabbing or shooting pain occurs. So far, no pain, just an aching that should abate after two or three more sessions. My cold/flu/bronchitis/whatever symptoms came back with a vengeance on the same day I took my very last antibiotic (Thursday). I felt the tickle at the back of my throat and initially thought “a bit of cookie is stuck back there.” By later that same night I could no longer kid myself into thinking it was a cookie. By Friday night I was out for the count for what I thought would be the entire weekend. I slept fitfully for about 14 hours, waking long enough to enjoy the soup Lou lovingly made for me. Yesterday we went to the gym, thinking I could swim and that the chlorine might help dry me out. I had every intention of jumping in and doing a quick 30-minutes.  Once there, however, the mere thought of getting into the water tired me out, so instead I went back and forth from the dry sauna to the steam room in an attempt to sweat out the rest of the toxins that have kept me sick for three weeks. It must have worked, because this morning I feel five times better than I did yesterday morning. In fact, I’m feeling so much better that I’ve decided to do a mini-sprint triathlon to celebrate my return to good health and in honor of today’s Pittsburgh Half and Full Marathon which I ran last year. But first, a nap to recover from awaking early to see Lou off to sunny California. Afterwards, a trip to the mall with my girls to purchase new swimsuits for St. Kitt’s and perhaps a sundress or two.
