We spent our holidays in Campton, New Hampshire, which is near the Waterville Valley Ski Resort. We opened our presents (except for stockings) on December 23 so we wouldn’t have to stuff all the packages into the truck along with the dogs, ski equipment, food, clothes, coats, etc. The moment we opened our eyes on the 24th we were ready to drive to the house we had rented for the week, and breakfast was had on the road. What we saw of the house on the web was very nice, but seeing it in person was even more impressive. It was plenty large enough for us, and even had a basement apartment-style dwelling for another small family. We invited several friends to join us for a few days but none were able to do so.
The weather was unfortunately not conducive to doing much skiing, so we ended up going only three times: Twice to Waterville Valley and once to Loon Mountain. Ginger and the dogs were able to go hiking those same three times. The best snow was the first time out, when Kendra decided to join her and learned that snow shoeing is not as easy as it looks. The second time Lou joined her and it was more muddy and mushy than snowy so we had to use the clamps over our boots instead of snow shoes. Both dogs fell into the creek we had to cross on that day, but the humans managed to stay upright. The last hike of the trip was the longest and hardest for human and canine. The entire way was paved with a sheet of ice.
The New Year weekend passed quietly, except at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve/Day when even in our remote rural area noisemakers, pots and pans, and fireworks could be heard. None of us made any resolutions, resolving instead to just continue striving to be a better person.
- Whew! Tough climb!
- Rock break
- Franconia Falls
