The cafeteria lady

Film Title: Mean Girls.

This was my first day volunteering in the Senior Center kitchen for breakfast and lunch. They decided I should run the cash register, because a couple of the other volunteers preferred to wander around refilling beverages and clearing tables. Breakfast went well. Everyone was as nice as can be. Then the lunch crowd happened. What is it about the cafeteria setting that when certain women step into them, regardless of their age, they turn into mean girls? I made an error on one of the ladies’ orders and had to clear it out of the system and start over. We’re talking about $5.00 worth of food and about 20 seconds of time. The lady in question turned to the next one in line and said, “I hate breaking in the new people. They’re so slow and stupid.” Then she rolled her eyes and looked at me with a smirk on her face. Rather than saying something snarky back to her, and I had quite a few doozies loaded up to fire off, I just fearlessly looked her right in the eyes with a big ole smile on my face and said “That’ll be $5.00, please.” It just boggles my mind how mean some people can be. I feel sorry for them, because they likely had a miserable life and no one will be sad when they’re gone. I’d much rather be the happy “slow and stupid” woman who always wears a smile and has something pleasant to say.
